What is mindset & why does it matter?

How Our Mindsets Affect Our Training

What is mindset?  Mindset is our beliefs and thoughts that make up the collection of our mental attitudes and habits, impacting our responses to situations and events. A stronger mindset is essential for developing healthy self-esteem and reinforcing a positive mindset.

When it comes to fitness, our mindsets significantly impact our training. Unfortunately, many of us struggle with our confidence when it comes to the gym. Whether this is lacking confidence with using gym equipment or lacking confidence in ourselves.

We have fixed and growth mindsets. For example:

Fixed- I'm not doing that; I won't be able to.

Growth - I can learn to do anything.

Having a positive or growth mindset allows us to work on our goals with the confidence that we will achieve them. For example, our minds determine if we will train, how long for and how far we will push ourselves. We can change our behaviour and try to get into a routine of exercising; however, if we haven't changed our mindset, we tend to fall back into old habits.

You are far more likely to be able to lift that heavier weight with the mindset of "I can lift it".

You are far more likely to do that extra rep if you tell yourself you can do it.

Top Tips Help For A Healthier Mindset

Find your reason - Find your own motivation. Self-motivation is powerful and far more beneficial than external motivation from a friend or a family member. What's your why? Whether exercise will be your stress relief, whether your goal is to lose weight, or just because you enjoy sports/fitness. Making it personal will help to give you that push to get started and keep going.

Take your time - It takes longer than expected to reach our goals; it doesn't happen overnight. Take your time and be patient with yourself. Forcing or rushing ourselves only leaves us disappointed when we're not quite there yet but expecting to be. This will give a knock-on effect and most likely cause us to quit.

Enjoy a rest day, completely guilt-free - Rest days are just as important as exercise! Taking regular breaks in your fitness regime allows your body to recover and repair, and it is important to know that rest days are ok!

What Avenue Tennis can do to help

Speaking with your Personal Trainer gives you the opportunity to discuss your goals and learn how to reach them. In addition, our Personal Trainers will run through the equipment with you to help you feel comfortable and confident that you really do know what you are doing. Stepping into the gym for the very first time or for the first time after a break can be incredibly intimidating. However, we can offer you that extra bit of support to get you back into the swing of things.
