Benefits Of Strength Training For Women
Our Fitness Team Leader, Lisa, is a passionate advocate of women’s weight training. Having competed in bodybuilding competitions herself, she knows first-hand the benefits of weightlifting. Here’s what she has to share about the benefits and impact of strength training for women.
When it comes to fitness, the importance of regular exercise and strength training cannot be overstated, especially for women. In the past women have often focused on cardiovascular training or low intensity exercises as a away to keep fit. And while these forms of exercise are good to practice, incorporating strength training can offer a multitude of health benefits for not only physical health, but mental health and overall quality of life. Below I have listed some of the main reasons women should weight train.
1. Body Composition
From my experience as a PT, I often hear that women do not want to strength train because they don’t want to look “bulky”. I can assure you this will not happen, women do not have enough testosterone in their body naturally to build large amounts of muscle. Strength training is one of the most effective ways to improve your body composition. While cardio helps to burn calories, strength training helps to tone the body.
2. Faster Metabolism
As women age, we naturally lose muscle mass, which can lead to a decrease in metabolism. Strength training is one of the most effective ways to combat this process. By engaging in resistance exercises, women can build muscle which in turn increases the body’s resting metabolic rate (RMR). This means that even when you’re not working out, your body is burning more calories at rest, helping with weight management and overall health.
3. Stronger Bones & Injury Prevention
Women are more susceptible to osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become brittle and weak, especially as they age. Strength training plays a crucial role in building bone density. When you engage in weight-bearing exercises, the stress placed on bones encourages them to become denser and stronger. This helps reduce the risk of fractures and osteoporosis later in life.
4. Hormone Health
Strength training has a positive impact on hormones, which play a significant role in a woman’s overall health. Regular strength workouts can help balance hormones related to stress, blood sugar levels, and metabolism, which can improve everything from energy levels to sleep quality.
5. Confidence & Empowerment
One of my favourite things about personal training is watching my client’s confidence grow! Many women (and men) experience a boost in confidence when they realise they’re capable of lifting heavier weights, accomplishing physical feats they previously thought were impossible, and feeling stronger both physically and mentally. This newfound confidence often extends into other areas of life, improving both personal and professional aspects.
